The Secret History of Our Streets
Just a reminder they’re showing this again on BBC4, starting tonight at 10pm. Really good series if anyone missed it the first time around.

The six episodes are: Deptford High Street, Camberwell Grove, Caledonian Road, Portland Road, Reverdy Road, Arnold Circus.

Re: The Secret History of Our Streets
I really liked it. The way things are going in London, they'll have plenty of more modern examples if they ever wanted to make second series.

Bob, good to hear re your uncle being a hammer. Explains why it's such a good programme, haha.

Didn't see the family seres, I'll keep an eye out for it. Any chance of a second series of Streets?

Thanks for this - I used to live on Caledonian Road. I'll have to make sure I watch that one.

Re: The Secret History of Our Streets
zeb/V All the episodes are well worth a watch. Though the ones you have a personal connection to are particularly interesting.

I lived for decades around Brook Green/Shepherds Bush/Ladbroke Grove etc. so the one on Portland Road was especially interesting/depressing. As I remember it when you probably could have bought the whole street for the current price of a single house on it.

It's also interesting as the bloke from the banking family, who'd had enough of it all and was pissing off to live in the forest, came across like a reasonable human being. Albeit a family trust owned the forest in question..

Re: The Secret History of Our Streets
Great programme, social cleansing at its worst, a lot of those planners should have been put in clink for crimes against humanity, disgusting !

Saw the Portland Road & Caledonian Rd ones the first time but hadn't seen that Deptford High St one.
Excellent stuff.
So much for progress, eh?

Bbc4 does some great stuff
Things like this should be on bbc1 and a new series financed by cancelling crap like Miranda and Citizen Bloody Khan

Re: The Secret History of Our Streets
Sadly, I think a series like this would come under 'minority interest' as far as the BBC are concerned.

wankers..

Re: The Secret History of Our Streets
Absolutely fascinating series. Deptford probably my favourite episode. Planners tried to tear it all down but forgot about one single street which escaped. All those houses are now listed and worth millions, unlike the shit that was put up around it.

Sixties town planning had a lot to answer for. *Shakes fist*

Re: The Secret History of Our Streets
The best bit for me was when the geezer whose family had the fruit and veg stall was taking the other bloke around the area and the old boy walked past and said
" are you going to tell them the truth about how they fucked up everything ? " Cracked me up

Re: The Secret History of Our Streets
Fred,i remember that line from the first time I watched it. The deptford one was the best for me too. I used to drink in the Windsor castle on DHS by the station in the 90s. Always bugged me then why that one road survived. I knew it wasn't down to surviving the blitz etc so when I saw that it gave me the answer.
